“It is really important for everyone to expect to make a difference, everyone should strive to have some level of impact and influence in their lives and in their work regardless of the field they work in.” Communications consultant and coach, Trudy Lewis emphasised the importance of impact and influence we each have, during the second Masterclass session with members of The Nest. “We are all leaders in our own right” she said. She pointed out that we are sometimes unconscious of the influence and impact we have on those around us and also emphasized the leadership role we all play with the quote by John Quincy Adams: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more – you are a leader.” and the quote by Robin Sharma: “Leadership is not a title, it is a behaviour. Live it.”
Where does purpose tie in with leadership? Trudy highlights that the basis of purpose is leadership and leaders leading with EDGE. Leaders should lead:
by being Dynamic
they should be Genuine
and should be Effective.
With leadership, purpose is a key point and with that purpose is the reason we are here. It is the actions behind that, what we do about our being here and how we play that in our lives. She encourages us to look at purpose from the perception that it does not have to be daunting, it can be something that you navigate through and set new milestones and goals that align to where you are at a said point. “Purpose is more of a journey than a destination and as a result is really about one’s perspective.”
From Trudy’s perspective, to have a purpose doesn’t have to be changing the world, it can also be about something that is important to you. It is about intention, goals, dreams and aspirations It gives you a sense of responsibility and is the desire to make a difference.
She also notes that according to research, pursuing a life of purpose has great benefits.
You will be happier and more satisfied if you understand what your purpose is.
Understanding your purpose lowers your stress levels and gives you a sense of well being.
You come across as more confident.
To cultivate purpose, Trudy advises that we visualise and tap into our imaginations; find our strengths; focus on positive emotions; and discover, explore and do something practical like volunteering.
Trudy ended her presentation with a powerful quote from the late Chadwick Bosman; “Purpose crosses disciplines. Purpose is an essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill. Whatever you choose for a career path, remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.” You can find Trudy on Twitter @lewiscomms and on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/trudy-lewis-chart-pr.
